Die University of Newcastle ist eine international orientierte Universität und gehört zu Australiens führenden Forschungsinstitutionen. Die Australian Universities Quality Agency lobte die Uni jüngst als eine dynamische, exzellent geführte Hochschule - und das finden auch die Studierenden. Die Zahl der Studienbewerber wächst stetig, 2008 gab’s erstmals mehr als 30.000 Studiernden, die in Newcastle ihren Abschluss machen wollten.
Über 150 Bachelor- und Masterprogramme werden an der University of Newcastle an fünf Fachbereichen angeboten: in Wirtschaft und Recht, Erziehungs- und Geisteswissenschaften, Ingenieurwissenschaften, Gesundheitswissenschaften sowie Informatik.
Es gibt zwei Campusanlagen: Der größere von beiden liegt auf einem 1,45 qkm großen Buschlandgrundstück in Callaghan, etwa 12 km westlich vom Stadtzentrum von Newcastle. Das Konservatorium, die Rechtswissenschaft und die Graduate School of Business sind alle in der Nähe des Civic Park im Stadtzentrum von Newcastle gelegen. Der andere Campus befindet sich an der Central Coast in Ourimbah, ungefähr auf halber Strecke zwischen Newcastle und Sydney.
Auf den Campi herrschen eine internationale, lebendige und freundliche Studienatmosphäre. Hervorragend ausgestattete Forschungs- und Unterrichtsräume, gut ausgestattete Bibliotheken, moderne Sportanlagen, Geschäfte und Cafés sorgen für reibungsloses akademisches Weiterkommen und bieten den richtigen Mix aus Bücherwälzen und Entspannung.
Newcastle ist direkt am Meer gelegen. Die 290.000 Einwohnerstadt bietet schöne Strände für Surfer und ein abwechselungsreiches Nachtleben. Am Wochenende locken Ausflüge in die gut 160 Kilometer entfernte Kultur- und Shoppingmetropole Sydney.
