18 questions for an exchange student

1. Who are you and where do you come from?
My name is Lukasz Hasske and I am studying Mechanical Engineering in Koblenz, Germany. I was born in 1988 in Poland but I have lived in Germany since 1991.

2. What was your study abroad destination? What made you decide to study abroad there?
My destination was the Kasetsart University in Bangkok. I wanted to go on exchange in Asia because I have always been interested in Asian culture, landscape and especially the technical innovations from the Asian market.
I am fascinated by the geographical distinctiveness of Thailand as well as the good-natured mentality. Bangkok is an amazing city which represents both the modern and the traditional side of Thailand.

3. How did you experience the application and acceptance procedure?
It was really easy to apply for a study abroad via Asia Exchange and the procedure went really quickly.

4. Which things were the highlights of your exchange?
It’s hard to say. The experiences with a new culture, landscape, food and people were the highlights. Especially the Thai people were endlessly surprising. I learned something new about their culture and lifestyle every day.

5. What do you think about the balance between schoolwork and free time activities?
To be honest, I never had so much free time while studying before. Here in Germany I have to study about 30 hours a week and I work at least 15 hours a week, too. In Bangkok I attended four courses which all had 2-4 lectures a week. That left me with plenty of free time to enjoy Thailand.

6. Which have been the most interesting things in your studies?
Due to the international composure of the bachelor system the content was similar to my curriculum in Germany. It was still something different to get to study with Thai students.

7. What is your opinion about AE's charity work (currently done in Bali and Phuket)?
Charity work is always a good thing! If more people would help poor people, we would make the world a better place.

8. Have you discovered new things about Asia while studying there?
Yes of course! All the things I had previously only known from books were suddenly right there in front of me! Every day something new…new buildings, new people, new experiences, new food etc.

9. Have you learned something new about yourself?
The Thai people taught me to take it a bit easier, not to be so serious about everything all the time. You cannot change the past so just let it go and go take it easy!

10. Where have you been traveling during your exchange? Which places have you visited?
I went to several different islands in Thailand (Koh Chang, Koh Kood, Koh Tao, Koh Samet, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan etc.). I also travelled to Laos and Cambodia, which was really fascinating and beautiful.

11. Why do you think Asia is suitable for studying abroad?
Because it´s a totally different world. You cannot even compare it to Europe. Asia will show you new cultures, landscape and mentality. Asians traveling to Europe probably experience these differences as well.

12. Why do you prefer doing an exchange to backpacking in Asia?
Home sweet home! I prefer to come home after being out, whether it is a little trip or a day at the beach.

13. Did your home university accept the credits you get abroad?
Yes, and it was very easy. The professors were really supporting and it was no problem.

14. Did you get some funding for your studies? If yes, what?
I got a scholarship from the “DAAD”-Germany and “BaföG”, which is a government grant. The amount of the grant depends on your parents’ salary as well as some other things.

15. Tell us your slogan for your exchange period!
Same same but different
and
Mai pen rai (‘no sweat’)

16. Would you recommend this study program to other students?
YES!

17. What are your greetings to Asia Exchange?
THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING. Going on this exchange was the best decision of my life!

18. What would you like to tell people that are planning to do an exchange?
You are an application away from paradise ;)
…and you will never regret it!
