Ein pulsierendes Campusleben, herausragendes akademisches Ansehen und eine starke Forschungstradition: Diese Attribute zeichnen die 1869 gegründete University of Otago in Dunedin aus und ziehen viele hochtalentierte Studierende aus der ganzen Welt an. In aktuellen Rankings wie dem Times Higher Education Supplement 2011 schneidet die Universität sehr gut ab.
Wer neu an der Otago ist, findet schnell Anschluss. Denn 80% der Studierenden kommen aus anderen Regionen Neuseelands und sind - genau wie die internationalen Studierenden - ortsfremd. Das macht es für internationale Studierende recht einfach, einheimische Kommilitonen kennen zu lernen.
Otagos Absolventen genießen ein hohes Maß an Anerkennung bei Wirtschaftsunternehmen und sind bestens gewappnet, um anschließend überall auf der Welt eine erfolgreiche Karriere einzuschlagen. Die University of Otago unterhält umfangreiche Forschungs- und Studienaustauschprogramme mit führenden Universitäten in Asien, Europa sowie Nord-, Mittel- und Südamerika. Das Centre for Innovation der University of Otago führt theoretische und angewandte Forschung zusammen und treibt so die kommerzielle Verwertung wichtiger Forschungsergebnisse voran. Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Medizin, Biomedizin und Naturwissenschaften, die freien Künste und Jura.
Bachelor- sowie Aufbau- und PhD-Programme werden unter anderem angeboten in den Geisteswissenschaften, Biomedizin, Betriebswirtschaftslehre, Zahnmedizin, Jura, Medizin, Musik, Pharmazie, Sportwissenschaft, Physiotherapie, den Naturwissenschaften, Vermessungswesen, Theologie und Tourismus. Ergänzend dazu gibt es Spezialprogramme wie den MBA, Entrepreneurship, Maori-Studien, International Studies, Naturgeschichte, Filmproduktion und Kommunikation oder Wildlife Studies.

Der Hauptcampus in Dunedin, einer lebendigen Universitätsstadt auf der Südinsel Neuseelands mit 121.000 Einwohnern, bietet einen interessanten und schönen Mix unterschiedlicher Architektur. Die Hocken Library mit ihrer umfangreichen Sammlung beeindruckt durch lichtdurchflutete Arbeitsräume, moderne Computer und gemütliche Sitzecken, was insgesamt zu einer angenehmen Lernatmosphäre beiträgt. In der Gegend um Dunedin kann man sich bestens erholen oder auch Feldstudien betreiben. Studierende leben teilweise auf dem Campus oder mieten sich eine private Unterkunft, meist in Fußnähe zu den universitären Einrichtungen. Hilfe bei der Wohnungssuche bietet das Accommodation Office: Dort liegen eine Liste mit freien Zimmern und Wohnungen sowie Stadtpläne aus, und wer will, kann sich sogar mit einem Bus zu den Besichtigungsterminen fahren lassen.
