Studium Real world education lautet das Motto der Unitec Institute of Technology (Unitec). Die Verbindung von akademischer Lehre auf der einen und praktischer Berufsausbildung auf der anderen Seite hebt die Unitec von den anderen neuseeländischen Universitäten ab. Alle Studiengänge an der anerkannten Hochschule sind angewandte, duale Studiengänge, wodurch die Studierenden optimal auf die Arbeitswelt vorbereitet werden.
Besonders renommiert ist die Unitec für ihre Ausbildung in Design, Architektur und Performing & Screen Arts (Schauspiel, moderner Tanz, Regie und Drehbuch). Viele Neuseeländer, die sich in diesen Bereichen einen Namen machen konnten, haben an der Unitec studiert.
Das Fächerangebot der Unitec ist sehr vielfältig Von Architektur, Garten, Innenraumgestaltung und Zimmerei über Elektrotechnik, Ingenieurwesen und Kraftfahrzeugstechnologie bis hin zu Kommunikation, Tourismus und Wirtschaft. Auch Kurse in Design & Fotografie oder Darstellender Kunst können belegt werden. In der Fachrichtung Sport können sich die Studierenden beispielsweise auf die Richtungen Management oder Trainingslehre spezialisieren. Das Lehrpersonal besteht sowohl aus Akademikern als auch aus Dozenten aus der Praxis, von deren Erfahrungen aus der Arbeitswelt die Studierenden profitieren.

Der Hauptcampus der Unitec im Stadtteil Mt. Albert ist ein weitläufiges Gelände voller Grünflächen, Bäume und Gärten. Die Fahrt ins Stadtzentrum dauert mit dem Auto oder Bus etwa 10 Minuten. Der zweite Campus befindet sich 20 Minuten westlich von Auckland in Waitakere und wurde gerade um eine neue Bibliothek erweitert. Die neueste Erweiterung ist der North Shore Campus, gleich gegenüber Takapuna Beach. Ein kostenloser Pendelbus verbindet alle Standorte.
