Studium

Die University of Sunderland

begann Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts als technisches College mit starkem praktischem Bezug. Auch wenn mittlerweile Studienoptionen in den Bereichen Geisteswissenschaften, Gesellschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften, Kunst und Design, Erziehungswissenschaften, Naturwissenschaften und Gesundheitswissenschaften ebenso angeboten werden, ist die Universität ihrem Erbe doch bis heute treu geblieben: Studierende aus den Bereichen IT und Medien, Wirtschafts- und Ingenieurwissenschaften finden hier ein besonders breites Angebot an Studienmöglichkeiten.

An der Faculty of Applied Science,

an der auch die Ingenieurwissenschaftler zu Hause sind, steht zudem seit eh und je die Anwendbarkeit des theoretischen Wissens im Vordergrund: Die University of Sunderland war die Erste in Großbritannien, die sogenannte Sandwich Studies (Duales Studium) einführte. Vorlesungen und die praktische Ausbildung im Betrieb wechseln sich dabei ab.

Die beiden Campus der University of Sunderland,

der City Campus sowie der Sir Tom Cowie Campus, sind in den letzten Jahren umfassend modernisiert worden. Es wurde insbesondere in die Freizeiteinrichtungen investiert, z. B. das neue Sport- und Wellness Center, das auch als Trainingsstätte für die Athleten der Olympiade in London genutzt wurde.

Mit 300.000 Einwohnern

ist Sunderland die größte Stadt zwischen Edinburgh und Leeds und wird, insbesondere unter Studierenden, als eine der most up and coming towns in England gefeiert – also eine Stadt die stark im Kommen ist. Direkt an der Küste gelegen, besticht die Stadt nicht nur mit ihrer einmaligen Lage. Eine lebendige, stetig wachsende Club-, Musik- und Kulturszene macht Sunderland zu einem attraktiven Ort für Studierende.

Krankenversicherung

Als internationaler Studierender wird man in Großbritannien mit dem kostenfreien Plan des UK National Health Service (NHS) versichert, der auch allen Bürgern Großbritanniens zur Verfügung steht. Internationale Studierenden die aus einem Land des Europäischen Wirtschaftsraumes (EU-Länder, Island, Liechtenstein und Norwegen) kommen, haben Anspruch darauf, auch wenn ihr Studienaufenthalt weniger als 6 Monate dauert. Hierfür müssen die Studierenden eine Europäische Krankenversicherungskarte (EHIC) besitzen, die die deutschen Krankenversicherungen ausstellen. Mit diesem National Health Service in Kombination mit der deutschen Krankenversicherung, die auch im europäischen Ausland gilt, sind Studierende gut versichert.
